Cronenberg Defends AI's Role in Filmmaking Amid Controversy

During a recent discussion at the London Soundtrack Festival, celebrated director David Cronenberg passionately defended the use of artificial intelligence in modern filmmaking. Speaking with longtime collaborator Howard Shore, Cronenberg dismissed critics of The Brutalist by arguing that AI has long been a behind-the-scenes tool in the art of motion pictures.

Drawing parallels with traditional film editing techniques, Cronenberg recalled how voices have been modified in films for decades. For example, he cited John Lone's performance in his 1993 film M. Butterfly, where voice pitch adjustments helped shape a character’s secret identity. According to him, using AI to perfect an accent is merely a modern evolution of this long-practiced art form.

Behind the Scenes of The Brutalist

Editor Dávid Jancsó further elaborated on the film’s production process. Utilizing AI tools provided by the Ukrainian company Respeecher, the team refined the Hungarian dialogue—one of the most challenging languages to master. Jancsó emphasized that AI facilitated minor adjustments due to budgetary and time constraints, not to overhaul the authenticity of the actors’ performances.

Brady Corbet, another key figure in the film, later clarified the process. Working alongside dialect coach Tanera Marshall for months, the actors delivered performances that were then delicately enhanced during post-production.
